Folderwell Privacy Policy
This policy covers the Folderwell local-first desktop app and the optional Folderwell Download Sources browser extension. Together they help users organize approved local files while keeping file contents and download context on the user's computer.
Stays on this computer
Folderwell does not require an account or upload file contents for cloud processing. Approved-folder information, supported local text excerpts, suggestions, action history, settings, and optional source memory are stored in local Folderwell app data.
Limited external services
Folderwell sends limited license information to Lemon Squeezy when it validates a key. Users can also deliberately share user-controlled private beta diagnostics with support. The Download Sources extension does not send source context to Vellumstead Labs or another remote service. The details and suggested exclusions are described below.
Approved Folders
Folderwell scans only folders the user approves, such as Downloads, Desktop, Documents, or a custom folder the user adds. A file the user sends through drag and drop, Review files, or the Explorer command is reviewed as a one-off item and does not silently become a watched folder. Folderwell stores local metadata needed to show suggestions, action history, undo context, cleanup review, and settings.
Local File Information
Folderwell may read filenames, extensions, sizes, modified dates, local folder paths, content hashes used for duplicate comparison, local document text excerpts when supported, and other local metadata needed to classify files and suggest organization actions. This information is stored locally in Folderwell app data.
Local OCR And One-Off Review
When ordinary text extraction finds nothing, Folderwell can ask the Windows OCR service to read supported screenshots or the first page of a scanned PDF. OCR runs on the same computer, is bounded by file type and size, and does not send the file to Vellumstead Labs or a cloud AI service. Files selected through drag and drop, Review files, or the Explorer command use the same local preview and metadata rules as approved folders.
Local Preferences And Results
Folderwell stores exclusions, duplicate/version keep choices, review outcomes, cleanup receipts, and optional reminder timing in local app data. Weekly review reminders use the native Windows notification system. Notification clicks open Folderwell locally; Folderwell does not send filenames or reminder contents to Vellumstead Labs.
Download Sources Extension
If the optional Chrome or Edge extension is installed and Download Sources is enabled, it handles context only when the user explicitly downloads a file. That context can include the active page URL and title at the moment the download starts, a download URL or referrer when the active page is unavailable, the original filename, the final local filename and path reported by the browser, the browser download identifier, browser name, and download time. Chrome classifies page URLs and titles as web browsing activity even when they are processed only on the user's device.
The extension sends this context only to Folderwell over http://127.0.0.1 on the same computer. It does not read or search browsing history, inspect page contents, form entries, cookies, passwords, or file contents, inject scripts into websites, or send download context to Vellumstead Labs or another remote service.
If Folderwell is temporarily unavailable, pending delivery records stay in a bounded, expiring queue in extension-owned IndexedDB. After delivery, the extension retains only the browser download ID and timestamps needed to avoid duplicate delivery. Folderwell stores accepted source context in local app data so it can explain files and suggest destinations.
Download Sources can be turned off in Folderwell Settings > Browser. Removing the extension clears its pending queue and extension status from that browser profile, but does not delete source records already accepted by Folderwell. Removing Folderwell's local app data removes those accepted records.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
- Download context is used only to associate an explicit download with its source inside Folderwell.
- It is not sold, used for advertising or creditworthiness, or transferred for an unrelated purpose.
- Vellumstead Labs does not receive it unless the user deliberately includes specific information in a support request, or access is required for security or legal compliance.
Licensing And Future Purchases
Folderwell validates license keys through Lemon Squeezy's license service. When public checkout opens, purchases will be handled by Lemon Squeezy. Folderwell does not store raw license keys; it stores only a hash, short key hint, provider receipt fields, and grace timing needed to manage access.
Removing Local App Data
Folderwell stores the information described above in local app data. For current build-specific removal steps, contact support. Before clearing Folderwell app data or reinstalling, keep an independent backup of important files and copy any support report draft or settings information you need.
No Ads
Folderwell does not include advertising SDKs or targeted advertising. Private beta diagnostics are user-controlled and should not include file contents, raw paths, filenames, saved notes, or source URLs unless the user deliberately shares them.
